Do I need any experience to start flight training?
No prior flying experience is required. Flight training is designed for beginners, and everything from ground knowledge to flight skills is taught step by step.
How long does it take to become a pilot?
Training timelines vary based on your schedule, weather, and goals, but most students earn a Private Pilot Certificate in 3–6 months with consistent training. With accelerated training, getting your certificate can be much quicker.
What does flight training cost?
The cost of flight training depends on aircraft rental, instructor time, and how often you fly. Private pilot training can cost between $12,000 - 18,000. A personalized estimate is discussed during your initial meeting so there are no surprises
Am I eligible to start flight training?
You must be at least 16 years old to obtain a Student Pilot Certificate, 17 for a Private Pilot Certificate, and 18 for a Commercial Pilot Certificate. Students must be a U.S. citizen or obtain TSA approval and be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Do I need an FAA medical certificate before starting?
An FAA medical certificate is not required to begin ground school or a discovery flight, but it is required before solo flight. We’ll discuss which medical level you need based on your training goals.
When should I start ground school?
Ground school can be completed before or during flight training and is required to pass the FAA written exam. In most cases, finishing ground school early allows you to focus more fully on flight training and progress faster in the aircraft.
How much do you charge as an independent CFI?
I charge $65 per hour for all instruction, from Private Pilot through Commercial, and that includes both flight and ground time. Because I’m an independent instructor, aircraft rental isn’t included in my rate. You’ll either provide your own aircraft or rent one from a flight school or aircraft owner you’re comfortable with.
How much does it cost to earn a Commercial Pilot Certificate?
Most students budget $30,000–$40,000 from Private through Commercial, depending on aircraft rental and how many hours you already have. I’ll review your logbook to dial in a personalized estimate and pair you with another student to split time and reduce costs. From there, the remaining training will be with me to prepare you for the checkride.
Do I need aircraft renter’s insurance?
Yes, it is highly recommended. Although my CFI insurance covers students, if you’re renting an aircraft, it’s smart to carry your own policy. It protects you and meets rental requirements, and I can help you find one that fits your training.
What are the age limits for flight training?
There is no maximum age to start flight training—you can begin at any stage of life. Students must be at least 16 to solo and 17 to earn a private pilot certificate. As part of training, students will need to meet basic FAA medical requirements, which we can talk through together early in the process.

Absolutely. Arizona’s clear skies, low humidity, and mostly predictable weather make it ideal for flying year-round. The terrain is varied enough to give you real-world experience, and there are plenty of airports and training resources nearby. It’s a great place to build hours efficiently and safely.
